Mohawk College graduate and teacher Connie Smith was awarded to the Order of Ontario for her achievements in journalism.
“It’s shocking, it’s wonderful, it’s surprising, and it’s an honour that’s very humbling,” she said.
Smith has been a fixture on local television for over thirty years, beginning as CHCH-TV’s first female weather personality following her graduation from Mohawk’s Broadcast Journalism program in 1976 and its first female anchor in 1988. Though she currently hosts a program on CTS-TV, Smith has remained a part of Hamilton’s journalistic establishment, returning to her alma mater to teach…
The women’s varsity volleyball team started another game with excellent execution, ball control and defence to gain a one set lead when they travelled to Redeemer University College (Jan. 24). But that was only set the Mountaineers could claim dropping a four-set loss (23-25, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19) to their cross-town rivals.
The three sets that went the Royals’ way left the same questions unanswered for the players and their coach. What does the team need to do to execute to their maximum potential for an entire match?
“I don’t even know, like, I…
The Redeemer Royals had no intention of laying down after Mohawk’s men’s volleyball team took a quick two-set to none lead on the home team (Jan. 24). The Mountaineers, in search of their fifth straight win, were in for a down-to-the-wire battle.
“I knew that, going into the third (set), that Redeemer was going to make sure that we earned it and that’s what they do – they make you earn it,” said Mohawk’s head coach Matthew Schnarr.
Redeemer was able to stave off defeat until a fifth and deciding set that even went…
One of Canada’s hottest coffee spots will be throwing its customers for a loop. Tim Horton’s will be changing the names of its sizes on Monday to introduce its new extra large, a 24 oz. cup. The original small will now be Tim Horton’s extra small size, a downsize that all cups will undergo.
“We tested the names of the new hot cup sizes with our guests and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Our guests also told us that they love our small eight-ounce cup, so we will continue to offer that size,”…
In an act of defiance, major websites across the Internet have drawn a line in digital dirt to give the world a taste of what it would be like if the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) were passed by congress. Wikipedia, Firefox, WordPress and even Google are among those that have blacked out their websites in protest or have changed their homepage to display their stance on the issue.
Despite all the negative publicity the bills have received since coming into being late last year, not everyone believes the…
Out of all the hobbies a kid could have one in particular took the world by steam. Boys, and perhaps a few girls, across America have been fascinated by model trains and their life-sized counterparts for over 90 years. With a new train engine the size of your finger commanding, on average, a $200 price tag, this past time has burned more holes in a hobbyists pocket than coal in a furnace. Unfortunately, as time moves on, so do tastes in entertainment. Video games and the Internet have become major players in competing for…
With one tournament and little practice played over the break, Mohawk’s women’s varsity volleyball team had to shake off some rust when they faced Conestoga Jan. 11.
“We obviously started very late intensity wise,” said setter Julie Gagnon.
The Mountaineers were lacking execution early and a hole in the middle of the floor during the first two sets had the women in a quick 0-2 hole.
“Well, we told the girls at every timeout between every match that number eight (Tiffany Pinksen) was going to dump on us,” said head coach Andy Nicholson. “We’ve…
With mixed martial arts booming across Canada, it only seemed like a matter of time before Hamilton took off as a large Ontario market. Hamilton’s hosted three MMA events — two of which went largely under the radar.
Local hero Jeff Joslin promoted Hamilton’s first MMA event “The Slammer In The Hammer” which made the most noise out of the three and saw over 3000 fans inside Copps Coliseum.
However, the timetable for another event promoted by Joslin is still unknown.
“Right now we’re in talks with what we’re going to do next, nothing…
Walking into the Fennell Gym on the evening of Jan. 11, it was obvious the men’s varsity volleyball team was still riding the high of defeating Alberta’s top-ranked team over the Christmas break in a tournament out west. The men were belting out their pregame warm-up chants as they prepared to face an outmatched and undersized team from Conestoga.
“I don’t think there’s another team like us in the league,” said Mohawk’s veteran libero Ryan dela Rosa. “We have so much swagger on our team. Everyone just has their own personality and it…
