A new beginning at the end of a school year

Ashley Durk - Managing Editor

As the school year nears its end, for the new Satellite staff, it is just the beginning.

As the new Managing Editor of The Satellite and on behalf of the Editorial staff, we all agree we have big shoes to fill.

I can’t help but reminisce of my childhood trying on my mother’s shoes. As I trudged across the carpet, shoes engulfing my small feet, my clumsiness was evident.
This new experience in a small, yet relevant way is much like my childhood memory. Just like the shoes that I once thought would never fit my feet, the positions we now hold may still feel a little big. Although as we begin our journey the tasks at hand may seem colossal, as we learn and grow as editors and writers, eventually the shoes will fit.

I would be lying if I claimed the idea of staying up late editing on Saturday nights and waking up early on Sunday mornings was appealing when Chantal Durand first explained the responsibilities of the Managing Editor. However, after listening to Chantal speak about her time spent at The Satellite and how she wouldn’t trade it for the world, I knew this was going to be an experience I would never regret.

This year’s staff did a remarkable job of producing a paper worthy of being extremely proud of.  Their hard work and dedication was apparent. The Editorial Staff can’t thank all of you enough for taking the time to help us. If it weren’t for all of you, we wouldn’t have known where to start.

As the new staff of The Satellite, we will use our passion and enthusiasm for writing to keep the same energized spirit alive. We plan to learn from the ideas of this year’s staff while further developing them and experimenting with ideas of our own.

Since The Satellite’s primary audience is the Mohawk College community, our goal is to get students as involved as possible. Although we may write and edit the issues each week, it is the individuals behind the stories who are apart of our community, that make this paper what it is.

So this is it. Our first issue, but also the last issue of the school year.  It will be many months until our next issue is released, but I am certain we’ll all be eager to return to school, and The Satellite, in September.
