[10 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Broke. And broken down | ]

You’re in college, probably broke, but lucky enough to own a car. Your maintenance light illuminates on the dash, you gasp, and a puff of dust comes out of your empty wallet. Why would you give any of your barely-existent money to some mechanics who will just jerk you around?
Why not do it yourself? You can do this. You like to think of yourself as a handy person. Remember that birdhouse you built in grade school? That was all you and your mom loved it. Car? Piece of cake.
Whoa there, …

[10 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on NYPR: Maybe it’s me? | ]

Hi. I’m Lauren, and I’m not easy to get along with.
So now what? I’ve admitted the problem, and according to the 12 Step program used by Alcoholics Anonymous, I now need to accept that there is a higher power who can help me: Oprah.
An article in O Magazine by author Maeve Binchy talks about “acts of friendship”: those things that you do to bring happiness to others. I make a conscious effort to do nice things: I bake cupcakes for my classmates, have friends over for dinner and whenever I …

[10 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on “Priority Seating”? Hardly | ]

In the McIntyre Theatre, there’s a small nook filled with hard plastic chairs. It would be understandable if you missed it, especially in the dark. The only thing distinguishing it from a storage space is a dark blue sign posted up reading: “Priority seating for the disabled.”
Sitting there is not a choice. If you have any kind of mobility device more intrusive than a cane, sitting there is a must. Not a big deal, right? It says “priority seating”, so it must be decent.
Not so much. Once the lights are …

[2 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Editorial: Driving Etiquette | ]

“Move, move, move, move, move!” I chant as I try convincing myself not to embed my Honda badge into the rear bumper of the driver in front of me. Unfortunately, this is all too common on the roads these days. So many drivers just do not know road etiquette and it gets even worse on the highway. Do you constantly ask yourself how the person in front of you is allowed to be on the road? Find yourself blocked when you try to pass? Have to lay on the brakes …

[2 Oct 2013 | Comments Off on Sextremism – Backwards or Forwards on Feminism? | ]

The feminist group “Femen” has been up to their chests in scandals. Recently, they were thrown out of the Quebec legislature for barging in, screaming and topless, in protest of the crucifix hanging on the wall. However, I found out about them because of their protest during the Nina Ricci fashion show during this year’s Spring/Summer 2014 Paris Fashion Week. It was reported by the National Post that they paraded the runway with “Fashion Dictaterror” and “Model don’t go to brother” splashed all over their chests and stomachs. I was …

[26 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Is the Miiverse an Anti-Social Network? | ]

Nintendo’s Miiverse has been up and running since the launch of the WiiU last holiday season and has integrated social activity within games to new levels. Players can now post comments, including screenshots and artwork at the press of a button while playing any game or application.  With adults, teenagers, and young children all interacting it is worth asking how users are coping with the vague policies contained in the code of conduct.“In order to keep Miiverse a fun place for everyone, we ask that you be considerate to other …

[17 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on What I did at Supercrawl | ]

Abraham gets up close and personal with the crowd. (Photo: Noah Salo)
I thought about reviewing Supercrawl for one second. Then I realized that would be insane. How does one attempt to capture the feeling of two days worth of concerts, art displays, food trucks and vendors all held on a downtown street? It’s literally impossible for one person to experience everything there is to experience at Supercrawl, so I won’t offer a review. Instead I will tell you my story about what I did at Supercrawl, and you can tell …

[10 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Comment: Wake up and smell the steam | ]

Everyone remembers the “satellite conversation” between two correspondents during the Cleveland Kidnapping case not too long ago.  The correspondents were in the same parking lot and were caught because viewers pointed out that the same traffic was appearing behind one correspondent and then the other within seconds of being on screen.  This was ripped apart by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show and had people laughing for days.  Recently though, CNN has had gear-heads the world over laughing.
After 26 years, turbocharged V-6 engines will be returning to Formula One Racing …

[9 Sep 2013 | Comments Off on Who (or what) is Miley Cyrus? | ]

It all started with a haircut.
Whether it’s her bold fashion choices, her ever-exposed tongue, or her twerking, Miley Cyrus has been splashed over all mediums this summer. Her music video for “We Can’t Stop” reached 100 million views in just over a month, breaking records records. She has also received validation from celebrities and musicians alike, praising her for her twerking skills, her individuality, and unique fashion sense. However, as Miley is a young woman who grew up in the media spotlight, the negative aspects of who she has become …

[24 Aug 2013 | Comments Off on Comment: Mugabe’s victory is Zimbabwe’s defeat | ]

After winning another disputed Zimbabwean election, 89-year-old Robert Mugabe was sworn in Thursday to serve his seventh consecutive term as president. Though many had hoped the tyrant’s 33-year reign would end, some still see promise in the man.
Earlier this month, The Guardian ran an article titled “Why a Robert Mugabe victory would be good for Zimbabwe” by British filmmaker Roy Agyemang. Agyemang, who spent three years in the country filming his documentary Mugabe: Villain or Hero? can barely contain his admiration for the president whom he calls a “dying breed” …
