[29 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Nintendo: Still in the game | ]

Nintendo has dropped a bombshell, people! Wait, is doing exactly what they mused about doing a bombshell? Nintendo has announced that they will pass on doing the usual 90-minute show for investors and instead will focus on their gaming booths and smaller events. Minutes after that announcement, the Internet exploded in a lack of reading comprehension. Trust me, reports of the company’s death have been greatly exaggerated.
First of all E3 is about the investors, not the gamers. The big press show is just that, and since Nintendo has begun announcing …

[11 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Editorial: Day Care Now | ]

I’m not the best crusader. Every cause I come across seems valid. But more often than not, I just don’t have the time to put much energy into them, and they fall by the wayside.
But there’s one cause I’m really serious about:
Mohawk College needs a childcare facility.
I know – don’t we already have one? Where are all of those little kids in F-wing coming from? The facility at the College, once a daycare centre, is now an Early Years facility, which means it doesn’t offer full-time child care: parents are …

[10 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Editorial: Turning up the heat on deniers | ]

So far, April has been like an iced drink spilled in your lap. The winds carry reckless gobs of spit from a grey and malevolent sky. “Sprung” is hardly the word to describe this year’s Spring.
So when thermometers continue to dip below zero at night, it might not surprise you to hear an off-hand remark denouncing climate change. After all, last year’s near- 30-degree days in March were something of a freak occurrence. Weren’t they?
The casual dismissal of accepted climatology, even as a joke, is serious. Mark McCaffrey of the …

[9 Apr 2013 | Comments Off on Editorial: Which is cheaper: a ticket, or your life? | ]

If I put my foot on the brake right now, we would probably both be dead.
That’s a thought that I think crosses just about every driver’s mind at one point or another while being tailgated.  It crosses mine more than twice a day while I’m driving on the 403.  Just the other day, I was victim to the worst tailgating that I have ever experienced.
A bald-headed man in a shiny, silver Hyundai SUV came barreling up behind me as I merged into the passing lane to get around multiple large …

[23 Mar 2013 | Comments Off on Take me under: reflections on The Undertaker, Wrestlemania, and a life of wrestling fandom | ]

He looked like a walking corpse. Appropriately, they called him “The Dead Man.” Clad in black and grey, he slowly stalked his way down the aisle. Disturbing organ music played. The camera panned to the distraught face of a young child, no more than five or six. If I was there, instead of watching on TV, that distraught face could have been mine.
“Coming down the aisle … from Death Valley, weighing 328 pounds, The Undertaker!”
Quickly, the camera pans to his evil, staring eyes as tears form in mine: the face haunts …

[14 Feb 2013 | Comments Off on Celebrating Valentine’s Day | ]

What do you have planned for the one day of the year that’s dedicated to love? Did you buy your special someone chocolate, flowers, jewelry, a card? Have you made your dinner reservations at a fancy restaurant?
Is this what Saint Valentine’s Day has come to; a day to spend money to sit in a crowded restaurant for the sake of showing someone your love? A day to buy a mass-produced greeting card, with an unoriginal message? A day to buy tacky red roses because that’s the colour associated with love?
There …

[13 Feb 2013 | Comments Off on Online dating: It worked for me | ]

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, love is definitely in the air. It’s also online. Dating websites like Plenty of Fish, eHarmony, Lavalife, and even the controversial ashleymadison.com – a website specifically targeted at people in committed relationships who want to have affairs – are mostly free and readily available for people to sign up for and try their luck at relationship roulette.
I was on Plenty of Fish about three years ago. I was living in Kitchener at the time and didn’t really know anyone while balancing school and …

[6 Feb 2013 | Comments Off on Blurg. | ]

To borrow a phrase from a recently retired television show, “shut it down”.
On January 31st, we saw the end of NBC’s unexpected hit comedy 30 Rock. We knew it was coming, but even though all good things must come to an end the finale still hurt for those of us who love Tina Fey and followed the show from its beginning seven years ago.
30 Rock was a TV show about a TV show, which has been done before, but never with such satirical style or tongue-in-cheek writing, and certainly never …

[15 Nov 2012 | Comments Off on Student stress: You’re not alone | ]

As the semester draws to an agonizingly slow close, stress levels are at an all time high. Pressures from all angles weigh down on students in all programs. Holidays and the work schedules that come with them, internship and co-op applications, final projects and exams – not to mention an attempt at a social life. To make matters worse, most students have probably run out of OSAP this late in the semester. I know I have.
The problem is not necessarily the stress itself, a little bit of pressure can push …

[30 Oct 2012 | Comments Off on A farewell letter to Ivor Wynne Stadium | ]

Dear Ivor Wynne Stadium,
It’s almost poetic that it rained for your last game, symbolic of the tears that some Hamiltonians must have shed.
Ever since the Pan Am Games announcement, we all knew this day would come.
Now that it has, it’s a bittersweet feeling.
Let’s be honest, you’re not the prettiest girl at the CFL stadium dance, but that’s part of what makes you so unique.
At one point, your north stands were considered too ugly to be put on TV.
Instead of cushioned seats, you have wooden benches.
You live in the…
