Women’s basketball team welcomes new frontcourt

Eight players have moved on from last year’s women’s varsity basketball team, six of them post players. To have any success this season, head coach Kevin Duffy will have to get big contributions from Cynthia Mosca and Megan Campbell.
“If we can get some easy baskets, than definitely we’re going to take it,” said Duffy.
The backcourt remains virtually the same and starting point guard Rachelle Abella and the other guards will need some time to work as a unit with the new additions.
“It’s just a matter of coming together, our timing on…

New OCAA veteran could mean big things for men’s basketball

During the men’s exhibition basketball game against George Brown, it didn’t take long to realize that Mohawk will have a dangerous backcourt to contend with this season.
Once Aminu Bello returns from injury, he will join fellow First Team All-Star Manny Campbell—which will undoubtedly make one of the best one-two guard combinations in the Ontario Colleges’ Athletic Association.  Campbell is a rookie with the Mountaineers this season, but has three years of OCAA experience coming over from Fanshawe.
“He’s kind of a pass-first point guard with a very big burst,” said head coach Brian…

Mohawk soccer teams win and tie against Niagara

Ashley Hagen has been a scoring machine for Mohawk since her rookie campaign last season.  It was a bit of a slow start for Hagen going scoreless in the Mountaineers first three games—but Hagen has retuned to her old habits with nine goals in two games.
The offensive outburst of late has taken the women from an 0-2 start to a 3-2 record.
Nicole Roberts was in goal for the shutout while Michelle Littler continues to reward her coaches for her extra minutes with her fourth goal in three games.  Melanie Wong and Fabrizia…

Mohawk’s rugby team is forced to grow up fast

A big part of competing in the Ontario Colleges’ Athletic Association is dealing with the loss of players in key roles and developing new players to fill them. That is the situation head coach Alex Paris is in with the men’s rugby team.
“We have a lot of rugby to learn to play over the next couple of weeks and for us to be able to be consistent we just got to make sure that we have our new guys understanding what we’re doing,” said Paris.
With the loss of last year’s OCAA Player…

Double-header loss puts pressure on Mohawk fastball

Back-to-back losses to the Humber Hawks on Oct. 1 means the fastball team will likely need at least one win against the tough Durham Lords in Oshawa on Oct. 13.
The women played great defence, but succumbed to a seventh inning run after just having tied the game in the sixth. The final was 4-3 for Humber. Nicole Leitch had two runs batted-in in support of Jessica Denstedt’s complete game effort.
In the second game, started by Mallory Martin, the lineup couldn’t string together enough hits and were shutout by the Hawks 5-0.
“We…

Mohawk men notch seven in win over Lambton

As the saying goes “you can’t teach speed.” Speed is an asset that you either have, or you don’t.
Nobody can accuse Mohawk’s striker, Adam Petrina, of not having speed.  The third-year player was all over the field against Lambton, creating plays for himself and his teammates.
“I was expecting a lot more from [Petrina] really, but he played great,” said head coach Richard Bennett with a smile. “I always like to challenge him to the next level.”
Petrina was a step ahead of his defenders all day. Early in the game, a defender…

Mountaineers rout Lions in double-digit win

Sportsmanship is something Mohawk’s varsity athletes are taught even before they dawn Mountaineer orange. Competition and teamwork are part of sports, but it’s sportsmanship that leaves a lasting impression on the college.
Sometimes sportsmanship can be frustrating. When it’s obvious that a team is not having their best day, there is only so much a competitor can do before everyone can leave the field with their head held high.
This was the situation for Mohawk’s women’s varsity soccer team and coaching staff when they faced a struggling Lambton team on Oct. 1.
“We pulled…

Back in the swing of things

A couple of tough innings gave the Mountaineers a 0-2 hole to start their regular season after a twin bill against the Seneca Sting on Sept. 24.
Bases on balls were a big reason Seneca was able to put together three-run innings in each game.  Three runs was the difference in both losses, 4-1 in the first game and 5-2 in the second.
“In both games it took a couple of innings before (the pitchers) settled down,” said head coach, Brian Weller.
A lack of practice and players due to the compacted schedule forced…

Varsity sports suffer as strike rages on

Usually this time of year the Mohawk Sports Park is full of varsity athletes playing rugby, soccer and fastball.
This season, however, the park sits empty.  A college support-staff strike means some of these athletes may be looking at a lost season. Many games have already been postponed and no one knows what the future holds.
“We have such a short season already that I’m concerned how many games we’re going to have to be playing to make up for those extra games that have already been postponed,” said fastball pitcher Jessica Denstedt.
Michelle…
