League of Rock wants YOU! (If you can rock …)

For those about to rock: we recruit you.
If you’re at least 18 years old and have a need for speed, a mean air guitar or a bad case of the non-stop finger drums, League of Rock is for you.
“The next LOR Chapter will give adult musicians stuck in the basements of Hamilton the opportunity to unleash their musical talent at two open house events,” said LOR co-founder Terry Moshenberg in a press release.
The second of the two open houses will take place Sunday April 21 from 7pm-11pm at League Of Rock…

Wiggins-mania hits Hamilton

The sold-out crowd leaps out of their seats, not believing what they just saw. And it’s still ten minutes before the game will begin.
That’s because Andrew Wiggins, the best high-school basketball player in North America, just threw down an amazing dunk in the warm-up prior to a game against a team of Hamilton high-school all-stars.
The usual. Just a little 360-degree, behind-the-back dunking action. The same dunk that scored Toronto Raptors’ rookie Terrence Ross a perfect score in the first round of this year’s NBA slam-dunk contest.
Well, not exactly the same.
“He…

Company Profile: Green Pixel

Joe Pendon and Rich Halliday met on the job five years ago and shortly after began working together as independent video game developers Green Pixel. Operating out of Hamilton, the duo recently displayed their newest creation, Dr. Vile at Mohawk College.
“Dr. Vile kind of came on for a game competition,” Pendon said. “We had to make that in 70 hours. It did really well and we got in second place and we decided to put it into our development pipeline.”
Dr. Vile is not the only project Green Pixel is currently working on.…

Reducing hate in Hamilton

Hamilton Police Services (HPS) is trying to reduce hate crime in Hamilton by encouraging a culture of respect.
“It’s about respect, it’s about cultural competence, it’s about diversity in our city and working on levels of tolerance within our community but intolerance for criminal behaviour that is motivated by hate,” says Chief of Hamilton Police Glenn De Caire.
A hate crime is defined as a criminal offence committed against a person(s) or property that is based solely, or in part, upon the victim’s race religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or disability. 54 per cent of…

Spring is on its way and that means new trends and new styles. For many, fashion means a lot of different things.
But for local clothing designer Josette Cacnio, it’s literally her life.
“From the moment I wake up to the moment I go to bed, I’m always touching clothes, researching trends. I work from home and I’m always designing, constructing clothes, day and night.”
Cacnio started sewing clothes when she was eight years old, and it’s been a natural progression to fashion design. It began as a way of making her own clothes…

New shades of green

When it comes to fashion, you don’t have to be a PETA supporting tree-hugger to make some environmentally-conscious and animal-friendly decisions. Many companies offer eco-friendly and/or vegan products, while other companies, like Etnies, are starting to put out full eco-friendly lines.
Etnies currently has a ‘Buy a shoe plant a tree’ line for men and women, in which the company plants a tree in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest for every pair of shoes sold. The line also includes some vegan/animal-free styles.

The men’s Jameson 2 Eco low-tops are completely vegan, and are made using a…

Demo camp on campus

Students and inventors gathered in the Arnie this week to introduce new games and helpful products at the tenth Hamilton Demo Camp.
The camp consisted of five presentations showcasing new technological programs developed in the area.  Each five-minute demo was followed by a Q & A from the audience.
PhD candidate in computer sciences at McMaster University Kevin Browne says demo camps have been going strong for two years and are a great way for people to get to know their community and learn how to improve their software and products.
