Hell in a hand basket
You were out all last night at pub and here comes Thursday rolling in like it does every seven days. You’re missing Thursday classes every other week and find yourself constantly asking classmates for what you’ve missed. Your grades are starting to drop and stress begins to build, so on the weekend you start drinking even more to the point of not remembering the night before. All of a sudden you’re in class on a Monday and people are handing something in. The teacher asks where yours is, but…
After what he could only describe as “many hours” practicing with his teammate Ryan Fletcher, and watching their bot maneuver its way through five mazes, 2nd year Software development student Brandon Lloyd was shocked that “Eggman” had finished in first at the A-Maze-Bot programming competition.
“It’s not that I wasn’t confident in our bot – I am confident in our bot. But I mean winning first place; it’s a little unreal.”
Eggman, the bot programmed by Lloyd and Fletcher completed each of the five mazes required, one of only 5 entrants to due so.…
Three environmental technician students are looking into Mohawk’s composting habits, and they want to make this examination as public as possible.
As part of a class project, Adom Bouchard, Chris Chevrier, and Zvezdan (Tom) Petrovic are working with Mohawk’s Sustainability Office in auditing the MSA’s compost program. This involves a lot of meticulous and messy work.
“We did a waste audit on all of the garbage stream and recycling stream waste in the Student Centre G wing,” said Chris Chevrier, the student spearheading the audit. “We went through each of these streams and sorted…
The Investigation
It’s Wednesday night and you know what that means, it’s time to hit the old pub to see exactly how the MSA handles its liquor. Since I don’t drink, I recruited two friends, Jordan and Dave, to tag along in the name of binge journalism. Before reaching The Arnie, we stopped at a friend’s place who Jordan considers a “hardcore partier”. After no answer at the door, we let ourselves in to what looks like a cross between a dark alley and a Payless Shoe Store. Every conceivable style of women’s shoe…
Mohawk has become the first Ontario college to set significant carbon emission reduction targets as they set to launch their environment management plan. The plan will commit the college to a 20 per cent reduction of 2007 baseline emissions by 2020.
“Mohawk’s environmental management plan will serve as the framework for all decisions made with respect to improving our college’s environmental stewardship,” says Mohawk President Rob MacIsaac. “Our plan calls upon all staff, students and members of the community to work together to build a more sustainable college. Getting there will require us to…
In just a few months, Canada is about to introduce Datemyschool.com, a site that originated in the U.S. that combines social networking and online dating.
Balazs Alexa co-founded the site after a past flame mentioned how hard it was to meet people from other departments, or programs. Combining both the public aspect of a dating site with features similar to social media sites like Facebook, Alexa says the privacy of Datemyschool.com is what sets it apart.
“You actually have privacy,” says Alexa. “Let’s say you go on Match.com, or you go on another dating…
Renovations seem to be an ongoing project for Mohawk and with each step the college moves closer to attaining their goals of sustainability. Some of the changes are a little less noticeable than others as lighting is replaced, bathroom fixtures are retrofitted and fans blow recycled air around the halls. These changes have been eight years in the making and are credited for an estimated $400,000 worth in future annual savings, with untold amounts of energy being saved in the process.
“What we chose to do was go after all the stuff that would…
Students of Mohawk voted their way to the top, making Mohawk the first ever college to win the TD Pump It Up Contest. The prize is a concert estimated to be worth $300,000, with musical acts Mother Mother, B.O.B and Team Canada DJ’s headlining the event.
Steve Kosh, Marketing and Communication Manager for the MSA, says he’s proud of the students for making Mohawk this year’s Pump It Up champion.
“I’m happy we finally won something,” he says. “A little college from good old Hamilton, Ontario actually took down [five universities]…I think the thing…
Before they even stepped onto their bus for Durham College, the women’s varsity fastball team knew they would have to come home with at least one win in their doubleheader versus the Lords to make the playoffs.
Starting pitcher Jessica Denstedt knew she was getting the nod for game one and said she was “pretty relaxed” about the game before boarding the bus.
Taking a game from undefeated Durham, in what would be a late home opener for the Lords, was going to be a challenging feat. Denstedt knew she would need support from…
With the wave of suicides related to bullying in the last year, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) rights groups are doing everything they can to make sure members of their community know they’re not alone. Mohawk College, however, is lacking the support that members of this marginalized group need to feel comfortable.
Marco Felvus, a teacher in the Human Services department at the college, says part of the reason there is no LGBT group is because students intent on organizing one do not stay at the school long enough. They graduate and move…
