A late push at the end of each half wasn’t enough to eliminate Mohawk from the Ontario Colleges’ Athletic Association rugby playoffs. Mohawk was able to hold off Fleming’s late efforts to hang on for a two point win in a thrilling first round game.

Size was an ongoing theme in a rematch of the Ontario Colleges’ Athletic Association men’s rugby final of the past two seasons. Broken tackles and scrums that jolted toward Mohawk’s half of the field made Humber an overwhelming foe to take down in the Mountaineers regular season finale at Mohawk Sports Park on Oct. 22.
“They had a lot of size on us,” Ben Tamming said. “Hopefully next year we can get some bigger boys out and do some damage.”

A big part of competing in the Ontario Colleges’ Athletic Association is dealing with the loss of players in key roles and developing new players to fill them. That is the situation head coach Alex Paris is in with the men’s rugby team.
“We have a lot of rugby to learn to play over the next couple of weeks and for us to be able to be consistent we just got to make sure that we have our new guys understanding what we’re doing,” said Paris.

Usually this time of year the Mohawk Sports Park is full of varsity athletes playing rugby, soccer and fastball.
This season, however, the park sits empty. A college support-staff strike means some of these athletes may be looking at a lost season. Many games have already been postponed and no one knows what the future holds.
“We have such a short season already that I’m concerned how many games we’re going to have to be playing to make up for those extra games that have already been postponed,” said fastball pitcher Jessica Denstedt.
